The Last Letter

“As long as the waves still kiss the rock-shore,
surely as I can still love you more,
certain as the sun sets and rises,
I promise I’ll be back, dearest.”

His seven-year-old letter turned my heart as cold as the ocean breeze. I’m done hoping. I’m done believing. I crumpled his words, balled it up with my shaking fist, ready to throw, let go.

Then I heard his voice, followed by rushed steps, then a hug from the back. I tasted salty tears, of joy or of anger, I’m not sure. But I’m sure he smells and feels like this.

  1. Oh! This is such an emotion filled one. Sadness, happiness, tears, joy, memories, anger… love really is a roller-coaster ride, isn’t it? 🙂 Sometimes, love last forever… 🙂

  2. Such beautiful poetry. I don’t blame her for being upset. It’s hard to trust after waiting so long. But, oh the romance of it all. Surely, she must take a chance. Lovely story, Rose.

  3. One small linguistic question — the last line, “he smell and feel like this” Are you using past tense or present tense? If it is present, it should be “he smells and feels.” If it is past tense, “he smelled and felt.” Other than that, you’re home free. 🙂

It’s a beautifully told story, Rose. And that poem at the beginning — wow! I love it! Very heartfelt. Right at the last moment he comes. Remarkable. My story had a similar story line only it was a little crazy. 😀

      1. Hahaha! I have taught English as a second language to many people. Sometimes in the writing, things escape detection. But, the best thing to do is ALWAYS write! 🙂

  4. Awww. 🙂
Yes, and, seriously, if you need my help, please let me know. I’m always happy to help.

Remember: English isn’t complicated … our three year-olds speak it with no problem. 😀

  5. That’s so beautiful and romantic. He has excellent timing. I like that she isn’t certain about her tears being from joy or anger, she has every right to be angry. And still have a happy ending. 🙂
