Like a predator waiting for a prey, I let myself be lost in this dark and mute cloak-like hole behind the thick brick wall.
She’s coming, soon.
With eyes focused in my treasured black bag, which has been ‘mine’ since I was twelve, I tried to silence my growling stomach. My heartbeat races, my mouth’s juice leaks as I sniff her scent – grilled seafood, maybe fish, (this is new) and the usual bitter coffee breath.
She’s near.
My sharp ears excitedly anticipates the usual crumpling noise followed by slingshot-like wind whip.
Shoot!
Her restaurant aroma fades.
My dinner is served.

Some also thought it was a cat. Because of the fish thing. 😀

Yes, the fish is what did it for me too.

oh wow, is the narrator an animal? A suspenseful read! 😀

You are not the first person to say that. 😀
Though I initially aim for a beggar, I realized this can really be a cat or any stray animal.

oh wow it’s a beggar? That’s the hallmark of great writing when multiple interpretations are equally valid!

Yes. It is actually a beggar. 🙂 really? I actually felt that I am unclear that is why my readers interpreted it not the way i intended them to.

I like the fact that it’s unclear. The story keeps you guessing until the end and that ramps up the suspense. If you’re going to change it, which I don’t think you need to, just add a little hint at the end. Nothing big. Some small detail that makes it clear. This way when folks re-read it and they will hoping that will tell them if its an animal or a beggar who’s devolved into animal thinking, they’ll catch that hint and have an ‘aha’ moment. I love those ‘aha’ moments.
