come in, June

Come in.
I am sorry for the
lack of energy,
would you like
some lukewarm
tea? Well, we
are tired zombies,
avoiding (or wait-
ing) for the wind
of death, we are
suffocated not by
the unseen killer
but the cruel knee
on our throat for
centuries, (we
chose to close
our eyes on) well,
probably you know
what May did, and
all the months before,
yes, there were
some cherry blossoms
blooming, some
midnights with
crickets singing, but,
our muscle wings
are quite rusting, our
tiled feet itching, this
year is a candle
dying, fading like a
half evening
moon, so June, can you
please bring healing

soon?

  1. Very appropriate for the times we are living in. June indeed brings with it hesitant trepidation in my case, where I fear new headlines will crop up by the time I wake up. I feel so anxious that I can’t sleep sometimes, and this is only the first half of the year.
    Beautifully written.

  2. This is strong, sister. Your metaphors are incisive–rusting wings and “tiled feet,” for instance–and your use of time is impressive. May was hard, wasn’t it? What will June hold? You’re right to hope for better, for some healing. I’ll be hoping with you!

  3. Very stunning, heartfelt and evocative to these times. We all need some hope and healing this awful year. Wishing you the best! One day, things will get better. It may not be soon, but it’s still one day to look forward to.

  4. This is powerful and describes the tired ness of the current situation, our ages coming nearer to the endgame and centuries of oppression for black people. We have to hope and keep fighting for a more just world. I think its what we are here for but at present there is an awful backlash but we will spiral away from this and hopefully in our lifetime. It is interesting how poetry can express so much without being opinion, just feeling. Thanks for this it gives me hope even though we are all tired at the moment.

  5. I love the nonchalant, slightly sarcastic opening of the poem, the dialogue to June….and the rhyme at the end.
Each month just seems to pass without significance these days.
