One Heart at a Time

can an empty plate be a gift
to the young mouths
and empty stomachs
waiting for elusive food?

can a broken doll’s remaining head
pacify an orphan
after a destructive bomb
snatched her parents?

can an old, tattered blanket
warm up a homeless
sleeping naked
under the frozen rain?

can my hands and yours,
can my smile and yours,
be the calm,
be the balm,
of the wounds inflicted
by hate,
by war,
by injustices,
created by our co-humans?

maybe.
one heart at a time.

So today’s prompt: write a poem that includes the word “gift”….or is a reminiscence about a gift you received or gave to someone. Gift us with your words!

Fading Photograph

i stumbled upon my five-year-old smile pasted on a fading photograph. it was just me and my sister. she was crying. i was clapping. (mean me?). my small mouth was wide open, wide enough to show the three blank, toothless-gaps. while my sister, a year younger, was red in her wailing feat.

looking at the once child me, i wonder when did my innocence fade? where did my child-like, pure bliss go? who snatched my genuine smile? is it the cruel world? or is it my own bitter words? but then the present mirror shows i may be tired, i may be sometimes sad, but i am braver. i am kinder. i am stronger. i am broken but better.

storm-battered sappling
turns into a dauntless tree.
breaking’s bravery.

In response to Haibun Monday #38, Kintsugi: The Art of Broken Pieces by Grace.
Our challenge is to write about finding beauty in the broken pieces or imperfection and/or the process of mending the broken pieces. You can write about a “broken” object, cityscape or landscape, or personal experience of mending and embracing imperfections. Please write 1 to 2 tight paragraphs of “prose”, followed by a nature-themed “haiku”.
Being that this is Haibun Monday, please write a haibun based on the prompt, ending with a seasonal haiku.   Don’t forget to visit and comment on others poetry, especially to those who have visited you.

Flower and the Bee (Part 1)

let me introduce you, my dear friends, to the amazing man i knew from Instagram. the epic photographer (go check his Instagram), a talented music producer and songwriter (go check his website), a budding amazing writer (yep. i am a fan and he is now on WordPress!), and my far away bestfriend, Shubhodeep Roy. 🙂 below is the lovely duet inspired by his photograph that we’re both delighted to share with you all. 😉

she was beautiful, a bright blue,
wearing a shiny coat of morning dew.
her sweet nectar was too much to resist,
so I dived into her and kissed.

the wind blew hard, we held on to each other,
she could have swayed and kicked me rather.
her delicate petals didn’t want to be free of me,
because i, however ugly, was her favorite bee.

he was the bubbly painted in yellow
buzzing loudly yet his inside is mellow.
his wings’ flaps are my kind of music,
as he nears i felt like i’m sea sick.

bathe in the warm morning rays, we kissed.
i hope my longing for him was unnoticed.
with him, i wish to have a time-stopping power,
for in warm dry or cold shower, i am his, flower.

Crossing Continents

we agreed to
dig and dig,
down under where
the worms and seeds
sleep and sleep.

for at the middle
of this continental-crossing
tunnel,
we promise to
fin’lly meet.

let’s say pardon
to the roots our
shovels will
step on.

let’s say bye
to the above earth
we’ll forget as we
move on.

for we will meet
underground,
beyond borders
of the map.

for we will live
underground
away from hate,
yes, towards love.

Forest Orchestra

the sweet tweets of the birds,
the crisp cracks of dried twigs,
the whispered whistles of the wind,
the sounds of the forest orchestra.
oh, surreal and soothing
flora and fauna.

yet they can’t calm me like
how your heartbeats’
thump,
thump,
thump
can.

In response to Sound Off! dVerse Quadrille #33 by Victoria C. Slotto.
I have a sound (adjective) reason for sharing this with you today and ask you now to use the word SOUND in a poem, following the very fun Quadrille form, a poem that soundly (adverb) embraces exactly 44 words, excluding the title. Check out the dictionary. I found a plethora of ways to sound-off. Maybe you will even want to play with assonance, consonance or one of the many ways that sound adds beauty, texture or feeling to a poem.

FLYLēF turns 2!

And the baby of my darling Lonna named FLYLēF just turned 2! To celebrate, an amazing group of bloggers and I have planned posts for you to enjoy, all centered around the theme…

FRIENDSHIP

Please make sure to visit them, and perhaps make a new friend along the way.

 FRIENDSHIP

I am delighted when I learned the theme of Lonna’s anniversary blog tour is about friendship. Why? Because I value friendships a lot.

In as much as I want to think, I am not so good in making friends, but I am good in maintaining them. I have kept some friends from my elementary, high school and college days. I can also say I am still friends with my co-workers from my two previous jobs. And I intend to keep them.

I know there is strength in living alone. In doing things on your own, but I find it comforting to have souls to share, experience and learn with.

My upcoming book, Between My Bleeding Lines, is a product of friendship. If not for the great writers here whom I become friends with, I would never be the writer that I am today. I would never be able to be brave and be courageous and write my own book. Got to give some shout out for them:

Between My Bleeding Lines and this blog exists because of them my faraway best friends.  That I think is enough proof of how valuable friendships are for me.

 TESTIMONIAL

And of course, Lonna is part of the WordPress community who showered me with love and fueled me to write and write some more.

I remember seeing her blog for the first time and falling in love with her graphics and her book reviews. She writes so well that she can make you run to a bookstore and go check out a book. She balances the good and the not so good part of the book in between beautifully crafted yet truthful lines.

But aside from that, I adore her bubbly personality and kind heart. ❤ She never fails to make me smile and warm my heart. Cheers, darling, for more years! ❤

The Picnic

after more than a decade of virtual hugs and late night chats, the four girlfriends have finally met again for a summer picnic.

two married, one engaged, one still single, they’ve bonded because of one common denominator: a guy they played love with. a nerd from college who’s known for his ragged blue jeans and an old-day-smelling shirt.

under the hot sun with the smoky smell of barbecue, there was no sound but their joyful giggles. until a dashing, familiar man appeared. until they heard nothing but bangs after bangs. then the green lawn turned red with fresh blood.

silence.

Buried Deep

her feet buried
in a deep, deep soil of grief
and self-doubt.

a larva cocooned so long,
afraid to break free,
to break out.

until the wind of change
made her shell dance,
wiggle, wriggle,
jiggle, wobble,
shake, bounce.

life’s gonna hurt
but it’s meant to be felt.
come out now,
free yourself,
be brave.

P.S. Another piece inspired by India Arie. This time it’s her song Break the Shell.
Child its time to break the shell
Life’s gonna hurt but its meant to be felt
You cannot touch the sky from inside yourself
You cannot fly until you break the shell

In response to Soil poetics by Björn Rudberg (brudberg).
May is here and at least in Sweden it’s when we finally have spring. This is when all the strength of soil and seed spring forth. Every day is just another shade of green.
Today I want you to write poetry about soil. To me soil is both the source of life, and destiny for death. Soil is where we come from and soil you’ll be.
