in the middle of the park stood
a rustic swing singing with whistling wind.
metal to metal friction creates creepy creeks.
back and forth, back and forth,
high to low, high to low,
the burning sun revealed no swinging child,
only a nameless shadow.

This is deliciously creepy.. Even if it’s just the wind I would have run, but with a nameless shadow…

Amazing how perspective can take the ordinary of a child on a swing and turn it into the stuff of nightmares. Well done!

Only the shadow and the swing moving. Nice. It could be ominous or maybe something more positive.

I’ve been there, in a park, at twilight, when the chains creek and the swing moves in the last shadows of day and the first dreams of night.

The first stanza is a reverie of the k or hard-c sound. The second stanza is sad–maybe wistful, maybe tragic. The swing might simply wish for a child to return. Or the child might have disappeared in an awful way. Either way, you make thoughts and feelings happen, sister.

I sensed so much loss in this–a child who is no longer, perhaps a child never born.

Even though this takes place in the bright of day there’s an ominous feeling with that creaking swing and that nameless shadow…well done and extra points for scaring us all! 🙂
