The Broke and the Bookish‘s Top Ten Tuesday for today is a bit hard to fill.

October 6: Ten Authors I Quit Reading

As a writer, I know how hard it is to write a simple short story. So how much harder is it to be able to write a novel?

On the other hand, I know that it is far too impossible to please all the readers of this world because as a reader myself, there are genres that I really don’t like to read.

I have mentioned for so many times that I have never read any Harry Potter book, ever, because it’s not what I like. But it doesn’t mean that it is a bad series.

So for today, I am not bad-mouthing these authors. This is just my personal opinion as a reader so please understand. 🙂 If you have some violent reactions then leave a comment and let’s talk. 🙂

Here are the  Seven Authors I Quit Reading (I’m not be able to include 10):

1. H.G. Wells because I didn’t like The Time Machine.

I somehow love almost all the authors that I have read so I only have seven here.

  1. The covers are ugly, it’s no wonder that you dropped those book, except Sara Dessen’s book cover. I’m not choosing book considering just the cover, but it’s good to has pretty cover too.

  2. I’ve never read a single book in your list which probably means I might not like them either. I read widely – across genres. Authors I hardly read anymore include King – can’t take the slow pace and meandering plot or the language much anymore. Koontz, also pacing & a bent toward inspiration versus plot (still think his wording is the most beautiful ever! ). I start and stop lots of books by famous authors became they lose my interest in the first few chapters. I’ve also read plenty of books I’ve loved by amazing authors. Good lost! Thanks!

      1. Welcome! I must say I enjoyed The Dark Tower Series, Firestarter, and some of his short story collections. I’ve loved Koontz for years but his writing has changed. 😉

    What type of books do u like reafing the most?
    Is it romance or mystery or historical fiction or art?
    I agree with u for h.g wells
    The time machine was not upto th expectations

    1. Hi there! I am fond of reading mystery/thriller/detective stories. 🙂 I can’t quite describe the other genres but some of my favorite authors are Mitch Albom, Nicholas Sparks, Paulo Coelho, James Patterson, Robert Galbraith (pseudonym of J.K. Rowling). 🙂 I also love light reads written by Rainbow Rowell and Graeme Simsion. 🙂

      2. Honestly, I have never read nor watch HP ever. (facepalm) It’s not just my interest but I know it is definitely good because I read J.K.’s other books.

        I think you have to try James Patterson. 😀 He is a thrilling writer. 🙂

  6. I read the first of Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles books but didn’t like it enough to read the sequels. I like crime fiction, but it didn’t hook me enough.

    1. Oh I am a junkie of crime thrillers, too! HEaring that from you I guess I will not really try any of her novels.

      Who’s your fave crime authors? I particularly like James Patterson and Rober Galbraith (pseudonym of J.K. Rowling). 🙂

  9. Oh I haven’t read any of these books so I cannot say if I like them or not but I recognized Alison Sweeney’s name because she stars in so many Hallmark movies that I watch! I had no idea she was an author as well. Good to know. I also discovered sometime ago that Lauren Graham (of Gilmore Girls) also writes books. 🙂

    1. I felt the same when I see Sparks on other bloggers list. I am sorry, too! But I think I have to try again as other book bloggers said she deserves a second chance!

  12. I really liked Uglies and the whole series in general. 🙂 I started reading one Sarah Dessen book and I really couldn’t get into it, so I am not planning on reading any of her books. 🙂

  15. I did not enjoy Uglies either, it just really wasn’t my kind of book and I read it after being exposed to a myriad of dystopian novels, so this one seemed tiring rather than original. I loved Sarah Dessen years ago, but grew tired of contemporary books, so I haven’t read anything by her for years.

  17. Just curious, have you read more than one book for any of these authors? I find it hard to judge an author by one book. There have been a few times that I like one book by an author but maybe not their other ones. Like John Green, The Fault in Our Stars was good, but I hated Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska.

  20. I’m so sorry that you didn’t like The Invisible Man! I’ve been meaning to read HG Wells’s books for a while 😦 But I agree with Scott Westerfeld, I tried reading the Uglies series but I could only read until the third book and then gave up.

  21. I agree, too many books too little time. I usually give authors who have written multiple books I’ve enjoyed two chances before I quite them for good.

  22. If I didn’t like one book by an author, I don’t think I would give any of their other books a chance either – so I totally agree with the thinking behind this list! Recently I’ve been reading more contemporary and have wanted to try Sarah Dessen – I’m interested to know why you didn’t rate her writing?

    1. I think Just Listen is a bit too shallow for me? 🙂 I actually cannot remember the story anymore and that for me is a bad sign! 😀

      BTW, I am loving new contemporaries lately so if you can suggest some good reads I would probably love to hear it. 🙂

  24. i fully support you 🙂 Though I’m like Jenn – i usually will read a couple different books by an author before i completely give up on them… UNLESS I can’t stand their writing style. Then one book is enough lol My TTT

  26. Nice list! I haven’t read any of those authors except Sarah Dessen (though I have 4 of Scott Westerfeld’s books on my physical TBR). I read Just Listen about 8 years ago and I remember liking it then. I hope you give another book of hers a go because I think she’s a brilliant writer. Her newest book, Saint Anything, was a 5 star read for me 🙂

      1. Ah. Now I want to read it just to see why the MC is annoying. 😀
        I felt kinda like that with Maze Runner. Maybe the characters weren’t so much annoying as lacking in personality. There isn’t much reason to feel connected to them, and I find myself not caring that one of them has a horrible disease that will kill him. 😦 (Which is really disappointing…you’re supposed to care about the characters!!!)

      2. YES! Definitely. Characters should be relatable or lovable and not annoying. I did not read The Maze Runner, though. It’s because I have abandoned YA dystopia. 🙂

  30. I also didn’t read beyond Uglies, and after that I haven’t read any other Scott Westerfeld books. I’ve never read any of the other books, and I’ve only ever read one Tess Gerritsen book. But as a rule, I don’t read all the books of an author in any case – I’m too scared I’ll get bored!

  31. The Uglies series has made me hesitant to read other Scott Westerfield books as well. I wouldn’t say I won’t read any of his other books, but it has definitely made me think twice…
    Which is a shame, because the premises of his other books sound SO GOOD!
